In some many senses this series stands at the polar opposite end of the anime scale from Tiger and Bunny even though there are some vague similarities. Whereas T&B takes a bold and innovative look at super-heroes featuring top-rate visuals, DD uses artistry and animation which could only generously be described as mediocre (although some of the background art, with the floating islands, looks very cool).Whereas the showmanship in T&B was cool, here the running commentary about the battle, its athletic theme, and what happens to combatants who get struck down all feels like cheap gimmicks which pander to kids and diehard anime fans with a fixation on cute. Even the key character design feed into this impression; the title comes from all of the fantasy world characters having animal ears and tails, with Biscotti Republic's Princess Millhiore and her dog theme being taken to a magical girl level of extreme cute.

It is entirely possible that I'mgiving this one an unduly hard time because it had the misfortune to be watched right after Tiger and Bunny, but I doubt it. Utawarerumono proved that this kind of fantasy theme can be done reasonably well, but based on the first episode this one is looking vastly inferior.

The video is as crisp and clear as can be expected for a DVD release. The series itself is around 2 years old, so the images are very vivid. The picture suffers no weird transition affects or skips when going to the next chapter. My only complaint is regarding the content, in that you don't get the "commercial" break intro and exit animations that separate the first half and second half of a show. The transition is smooth enough that you don't even realize you're into the second half of the show.

Since we are fast approaching the end of the series, (only 13 Episodes and 1 OAV were created), this DVD contains an extra feature not included on the previous 2 DVDs. Included are the 2 promo commercials that played on Japanese television before the series premiered. These commercials are in Japanese, so turn on the sub-titles to follow along.

The other extras are pretty standard. The Character Biographies are told from the perspective of the main protagonist, Kazuki. It's amusing to see how he views the others that he interacts with. We get some creator notes as well on two of the characters. Also, mixed in with the biographies is information about the main Rara antagonist as well as the new Robot.

Dual: Artifacts continues the momentum from the previous volumes. For the action fans, we see a tremendous amount of combat as the robot battles really step up. For fans of the characters, each gets to shine in their own light. We even begin to see more from the enigmatic D.

Overall, this is a very good series, with good pacing and dialogue. At its heart is a romantic comedy that should be expected from the creators of Tenchi Muyo!. Unfortunately this generates a slight negative for those who want raw action with their robot fighting. Once the viewer can work past any preconceived expectations, this series is very enjoyable on its own merits. I'm sad to see this series coming to a conclusion with the next volume.

From a simple description of Battle Club's premise, there are several possible paths the manga could take. It could be an action-packed sports manga with a little romance thrown in. It could be a romance with a little sports action thrown in. It could be a fan-service drenched harem comedy with a wrestling gimmick. With all of these (frankly preferable) options, one is tempted to wonder why Battle Club ended up as an empty-headed martial-arts spectacle of panty-shots, exposed breasts, lesbians, and exploding clothes. That is, until one realizes that author Yuji Shiozaki is responsible for Battle Vixens, known to fans and non-fans alike as an empty-headed martial-arts spectacle of panty-shots, exposed breasts, lesbians, and exploding clothes. It's nice to see him expanding his narrative repertoire.

Other than the visual nod to Fight Club at the beginning of the book, it's difficult to think of even a single redeeming quality in this confused, pointless exercise in mindless titillation. There is something a little refreshing about a male lead who is as unrepentantly vile and pathetic as Mokichi; pulling off a girl's panties is a standard ploy in fan-service manga, but Mokichi is one of a very few main characters to do it intentionally. But other than that, he is merely a collection of convenient voyeuristic tendencies, serving as an excuse to pack each chapter with as many close-ups of crotches and nipples as is humanly possible. The other members of the wrestling club are a collection of doujinshi-ready stereotypes: clumsy, naive Tamako; the flagrantly lesbian vice-captain; the transgendered captain. The dialogue is laughably stilted, and weighed down with a lot of unnecessary slang ("ya feel me?") and profanity. There is no plot to speak of, only a series of numbing, repetitive fights that serve only as opportunities for crotch-cams (the suplex is a popular move for obvious reasons), and as excuses for stripping the female characters of their clothing (including undergarments). Even the laughs fall flat, dependent as they are, on meat-headed sex-and-bodily-functions humor of a deeply juvenile nature. Occasionally (very occasionally) one of the jokes works—Tamako's dad and some repeated animal metaphors are highlights—but they aren't enough to justify digging through the comedy graveyard that dominates the majority of this volume.

Don't worry about the sports angle. Punch! isn't really about boxing. At the most basic level, it's about a girl who has the bad fortune to be surrounded by complete boneheads and finds herself drawn to the first guy to show any sign of decent human behavior. It just so happens that this revolves around a boxing gym. (Perhaps they're saying something about the intelligence level of people who take up the sport?) In any case, romance is the main point here, and dislike-at-first-sight is definitely one of the classic formulas—polite girl meets boorish boy and eventually warms up to him. Unfortunately, this first volume fails to do anything interesting with that formula, and you can only look at the cute artwork for so long before realizing that there's not much else to back it up.

When it comes to romantic fluff, though, this story pulls it off. For all his faults, Kazuki is just too hard to resist—unlikable at first, but gradually showing signs of kindness (fending off Ruo at any cost, helping out his little sister) until readers start to see his appeal. He's the classic tough guy with a heart of gold; what's not to like? His tenderness towards Elle is sure to set off warm feelings among the sentimental-hearted and have them rooting for the couple. On the comedy side, Ruo brings the laughs with his pompous attitude and spontaneous floral backgrounds whenever he shows up. However, the cast of characters isn't developed much beyond these basic personality traits, and it's all too clear that this is shoujo-by-the-numbers: Elle is just an average girl who gets a few lucky breaks, and the lead males are nothing more than the archetypal "good guy" and "bad guy."

Meanwhile, the story itself has some sweet moments, but lacks a strong motivation behind Elle and Kazuki's relationship. The first half of the volume is mostly just casual encounters—at school, at the boxing gym, at the store, at someone's house—how is this supposed to be interesting? Regular teenagers already do this all the time. When Ruo drags Elle to Tokyo for one of his matches, the tension finally starts ramping up, only to fizzle out when Ruo decides to back off. Kazuki moving into the gym and transferring to Elle's school adds romantic potential, but by then the volume is almost over, despite ending on a promising note. The overall effect is a story that lacks dramatic energy, and worse yet, is way too predictable.

So powerful is the essence of romantic fluff that it carries right over into the art, which is at its best when being cute and humorous. Sure, there are some decently drawn bishounen and the usual smattering of "dramatic realization!" full-page spreads, but the super-deformed characters and comedic expressions are in a class all their own. Elle's baby-sized pouts and goofy grins make her that much more appealing, and when the cuteness is squeezed into a single character—in this case, Kazuki's pet dog Choppy—it's almost too much to bear. But in a good way. Minimal backgrounds and straightforward paneling make for easy reading, although there are some points where the visual flow seems to choke—the rectangular panels don't always lead into each other, and it's easy to miss one while skimming down the page.

However, the series also starts with the kind of material that makes the tournament genre infuriating—character introductions, preliminary matches, and training sessions. It is here that the show is at its most mediocre, with predictable bishoujo stereotypes engaging in predictable acts of fanservice as friends and rivals get acquainted. What is also troublesome is the instant immersion into the game: there is no "beginner's guide to mahjong" phase; instead, viewers are expected to already know the rules or learn them along the way. Even seasoned players may be surprised by the peculiarities of the Japanese scoring system, as mahjong comes in multiple variants, just like poker.

Those who survive the early episodes, however, will be rewarded with a tournament arc as gripping as any mainstream fighting or sports anime. The Prefectural Qualifiers, which span most of the episodes in the teens, bring out the best in Saki: the characters finally evolve past stereotype, revealing unique tactical styles and "superpowers" such as turning one's self invisible, intentionally playing low-probability hands, or simply blitzing through opponents in the first round. The pacing and cliffhangers throughout this arc are second to none, with maybe the only complaint being that mahjong is often a game of pure dumb luck—so if you were expecting some kind of strategizing on a level with Hikaru no Go or Eyeshield 21, it won't be found here.

Unfortunately, the Prefectural Qualifiers are so masterfully done that the next stage of the tournament—the Individual Qualifiers—falls short, both in quality and in episode count. The final arc stumbles toward the finish line, ending on an "our adventure is just beginning!" note and showing in the credits that there was a lot more manga material that couldn't be covered in time. Thus the series ends up with a great ending in the middle, and an awkward middle at the end. Could a second season be in the works?

Even though it falters at the finale, the series still delivers some thrilling gameplay moments, thanks to an over-the-top animation style full of flashy sequences and visual metaphors. Saki's signature move, for example, is rendered with electric sparks, CGI effects and dramatic camera angles; another special move that translates to "Plucking the moon from the bottom of the sea" is portrayed as a rising waterline threatening to drown the players. If a tabletop game seems like a boring concept for a TV show, well, this series does everything in its power to make it as un-boring as possible. Sadly, the same can't be said for the listlessly animated school-life scenes and cookie-cutter character designs—and with so many different high school teams, one can get all the way to the final episode and still not remember who all the players are aside from vaguely recognizing their faces.

The show's soundtrack falls into a similar situation as the animation: absolutely electrifying during major gameplay scenes, but generic and boring otherwise. The technopop beats and blaring brass during Saki's finishing moves add that extra layer of grandiosity to the moment, but cut to a scene of the characters chatting with each other and it's mostly forgettable fluff melodies in the background. Even Saki's yuri-tinged friendship with teammate Nodoka—apparently an attempt to shoehorn some emotional weight into the series—is punctuated mostly by shallow, sentimental ballads.

But of course, one does not watch Saki for emotional weight or subtle artistry. This is, above all, a celebration of the thrill of competition, the exuberant highs and devastating lows that come with any tournament—even if it is just a tabletop game between high school students. Of course, it does require some suspension of disbelief to appreciate the exaggerated animation, uncanny special abilities, and ridiculously lucky competitors involved. And it takes an even more forgiving eye to overlook the poor planning that results in the series peaking too early and ending on an anticlimactic note. But for all its flaws, Saki has accomplished at least one thing: it's taken the mahjong genre out of the world of yakuza and salarymen (where even Akagi dwells), and finally brought it to the realm of the everyday anime fan.

Though Shingu might technically be considered a mecha title, to regard it as (or expect it to be) primarily a mecha title would be terribly inaccurate. Shingu, the white mecha which lends the series its name, and other mecha only appear in three of the five episodes in this volume for a total of about 10 minutes, though they are referenced at other times. This volume is instead much more a light-hearted story about a boy who gradually discovers new dimensions of weirdness underlying the calm normality of his environment, while a side story thread in episodes 4 and 5 concerns an undercover Galactic Federation diplomat trying to reason with an alien spy. Mostly, though, the story focuses on Hajime, who is sometimes at the center of the action and other times just an observer, but always serves as the narrator. He even occasionally speaks directly to the camera during a scene, which in an amusing twist is actually noticed and commented on by those who happen to be around when he does it (who think he's just talking to air). The story isn't just about the weird stuff, either. A lot of normal Japanese middle school activities and character relationships go on as well, providing a distinct contrast to all the stuff about aliens and telekinetic powers.

Perhaps the biggest weakness of Shingu is a lack of creative vision on what the future looks like. Shingu's vision of a Japanese town and school in 2070 is little different than what it looks like in current day, with only a few small technical advancements (such as fold-up laptops) giving any suggestion that this is the future. Only one major cultural difference exists, but it's a big one which will be immediately apparent to any anime fan or native Japanese viewer: kids of the future don't wear school uniforms anymore, and apparently haven't worn them in decades. Because of this, Muryou really sticks out when he comes to school dressed in an “outdated” school uniform. This and the extent of student authority on some matters suggest a more progressive school system in this imagined future than the one that exists now in Japan, even though the structure, activities, and buildings look more or less the same.

Despite what it might look like from the cover art, the artistic style of Shingu is actually a bit old-fashioned. Though its use of shadows marks it as a product of digital coloring, it lacks the glossy look and sleek lines so common in contemporary anime series. This isn't necessarily a Bad Thing, as this is still a visually appealing series which features excellent background art and distinctive and pleasing, if not always original, character designs (well, except for the friend of Hajime's with the ridiculous overbite), but except for the shadowing this series looks like it could have been made in the late 80s rather than in 2001. The mecha designs are more uneven; the acorn-shaped ones are just ridiculous, while Shingu's design is much more stylish and creative. The animation isn't MADHOUSE's best effort but it's good enough, while the integration between foreground and background art is generally good but not flawless. Opener artistry is very ordinary and closer artistry is very absent. Despite some physical violence and threats of bodily harm, not a speck of graphic content can be found anywhere in the series, making this a safe view for anime fans of any age.

The musical scoring for Shingu is critical to setting its light-hearted tone. Musical numbers range from piano ditties to jazzy trombone-heavy horn pieces to woodwind-based melodies, even some string numbers and synthesizer work, but all of it has a light, fun-loving spirit. Dramatic scenes naturally have more dramatic music, but even in those cases it never sounds too heavy or serious. The orchestrated opening number is entirely forgettable, while the closing number is a light, pleasant, jazzy piano-dominated number, the kind of thing that would sound good as background music at a formal party.

Like the majority of the DBZ movies, this story isn't actually a part of the natural storyline of the TV series. In terms of a timeline, the story takes place around the time of the Namek Saga. It does follow the standard monster of the week formula and the outcome of the movie is pretty obvious from the start. The story, while formulaic, is still good in its own right. The various interactions between the main characters are what the viewer expects and remains entertaining.

Extras are the typical Funimation fare, like previews of other Sagas in the DBZ series. The menus are rather clunky with slow animation between each, but are clearly marked. It is also easy to access the different languages thanks to a one-click choice. This makes it easy to switch between the Japanese and English versions. Be warned though: because of the chapter setup, it is important to use the menus to switch between the versions instead of a DVD players remote. Switching between them with the remote could lead to getting the dub instead of the subtitles.

Ignoring the horrible dub provided by Funimation, the movie remains pretty decent. For fans of the show, the DVD is worth getting thanks to the addition of the original Japanese dialogue. The story isn't all that thought-provoking, but does a good job of entertaining.

Unique works that defy classification are extremely rare in any medium. While not without precedent, Mushi-Shi is quite unique, and definitely difficult to pin into a category. The quality of Mushi-Shi goes beyond simply squirming away from categorization though; it's a work so beautiful on so many levels that it gives chills, a treasure so precious that only a fool would pass it by.

It's a near-perfect confluence of imagery and the story-telling art. It weaves tales of wonder with exquisite images, with mountains, fields, plains, plateaus, rivers and oceans. Settings possessed of a hypnotic natural charm, full of trees and rocks and life; settings enhanced by the ethereal beauty of the mushi while simultaneously being the only imaginable places where such creatures could dwell. Humans and their constructs, instead of standing in contrast to the wild, blend seamlessly in—part of the natural order rather than outside of or in opposition to it. Every episode includes at least one sequence of transcendental power, of almost religious awe—a woman dissolving into a foaming mass of mushi, children on a mountaintop pouring clouds into the sky from their mouths and ears, a rainbow river of light bursting from the ground and flowing into the heavens. The stories described by this imagery demonstrate a beauty that goes beyond the merely aesthetic. The structure is purely episodic, which might be a liability in a lesser series, but in Mushi-Shi simply highlights its preternatural ability to weave dramas of often wrenching power in the bare twenty-three minutes allowed per episode. There's a deeply felt sympathy, a core of kindness and understanding that the writers bring to bear on these occasionally tragic tales. The result is warm and unutterably human, insinuating viewers into the mystical via emotions and dilemmas that are often painfully real and familiar. The living rainbows, tidal waves of snakelike mushi and glowing pools of liquid life-force might be little more than fanciful images were not the path to each paved with life circumstances—the desire to make a parent proud, the need for closure after the death of a loved one, the fear and glory of self-sacrifice—that transform them into subtle emotional forces with a power that belies their lack of traditional theatrics.

The series matches the quietly affecting drama with recurrent intellectual concerns explored with equally unobtrusive flair. The mushi have their own ecology—webs of interaction and feeding, their own rules of behavior and logic. Tragedy in their contact with man comes not from malice but from ignorance of their ecology, just as the solutions come from Ginko's understanding and knowledge. The series regularly revisits ideas about subjectivity, in the "living god" episode exploring the differences in the perception of time between normal people and those possessed by mushi. Even the implications of Ginko's lifestyle are briefly explored in the rainbow episode. It's impossible to root under the surface of this series without practically tripping over an interesting idea, but they are free of the ponderous philosophizing and endless sophistry that might otherwise interfere with the series' ability to simply entertain.

Despite some feeble efforts to generate respectability, the opening episodes of UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie are awash in a sea of stupidity. That the series exists at all means that somebody must have thought that it was a good idea to blend a cliché-ridden shojo magical girl series with an even more cliché-ridden shonen romantic comedy – and why not throw catgirl series into the mix, too? The resulting mishmash of elements from all three fails because it tries to be too many things and, so far at least, has not succeeded at any of them. It badly wants to be funny but most often ends up being annoyingly silly, its attempts to be dramatic fall flat, and its characters are too uninspired and insipid for the series to be endearing.

It also has a bad habit of using the whole “aliens living among us” gimmick to justify randomly tossing odd-looking characters in amongst the population of a typical-looking modern-day Japanese setting, and let's not even get started on the whole “spaceship sticking out of the bath house/shrine and nobody commenting on it” bit. The only thing the series has done well so far is to provide lots of catgirl action for catgirl enthusiasts; heck, there's even a catspaw-shaped whistle to summon the army of catgirls and a Catgirl Ray Gun which not only turns young women into catgirls but apparently brainwashes them to be slavishly loyal servants of the Valhallan Royal Family in the process. Sadly this is nowhere near enough to carry the series even if you are a catgirl fan.

Then there's considerations about who, exactly, the target audience is supposed to be. The series attempts to be both shojo cute and shonen sexy at the same time, an awkward balancing act achieved only by alternating between fan service shots and exceedingly cutesy content, such as having an alien who looks like a banana with legs in amidst nude girls in a bath house scene or emphasizing breast growth in the magical girl-styled transformation scenes. Would anyone other than a fanboy appreciate something like this? That an 8-year-old girl (who looks and acts younger still) kisses a 17-year-old young man on the lips to trigger the transformations is also more than a little creepy even though the viewer knows that she's really 18. Let's also not forget the uncute floppy-eared dog Spottenheim, who seems to exist primarily to be a source of abuse (torture?) by the younger version of Valkyrie.

Defining a low point in a series this bad is a real challenge, but the leading contender in this volume is the apple-obsessed prince who appears in episode 4 with his bugle-tooting mecha in tow and a “Take Back The Most Important Thing For A Girl That Was Stolen Gun Mark 808,” which is the culmination of his planet's technology. No, really.

Character designs emphasize extreme cuteness in the kid-sized versions of Valkyrie and Hydra and big-breasted sexiness in the adult versions, with designs for other human characters looking like holdovers from any of a number of other romantic comedies. Alien designs are completely random, looking like anything from an old woman shopkeeper with antennas or a sexy girl with huge floppy ears to the aforementioned banana with legs. Costuming is a blending of elements borrowed from innumerable other series, with Valkyrie's mature form looking like a cross between the Class President in Kujibiki Unbalance and Rosette from Chrono Crusade – but of course she also has the magical girl staff, too. Shots of Valhalla could have almost been taken straight out of Ah! My Goddess, while other backgrounds are more typical. The bright, vivid use of colors favors a shojo style, but again, all the fan service favors a shonen look. The visual clash this creates serves the series as poorly as its competing story elements do, but there's little else about the look of the series that's distinctive or memorable. The animation quality, while not bad, also fails to impress.

ADV also does well with the extras, providing a substantial list of them to complement the reversible cover, company previews, and next episode preview. The highlights are the World Notes and Name Notes, the latter of which explains some subtle, clever things done with naming conventions which will be lost on most anyone who doesn't speak Japanese and the way they were handled for the English version. The former fleshes out background and setting details and provides additional information and commentary on some story elements.

Reading these before watching the series is recommended even though they contain a bit of spoiler content, as it will help make sense of a series which jumps in at the middle before going back to explain how things came to that point. Other extras include clean opener and closer, Japanese commercials, written messages from the original seiyuu, a jukebox collection of music videos using footage from the four episodes (one entirely consists of fan service!), and clean versions of the original on-air openers for episodes 1 and 3 and the closer for episode 1, the former of which are a bit racier than the versions used on the episodes on this DVD.

It begins and ends with the characters; an assortment of detailed personages whose idiosyncracities, insecurities and desires makes them not only the type of people you can imagine meeting on the street, but also the kind of people that you'd like to meet. When the entire school gets behind Yurie's romance, we understand, because we too want to cheer our hapless heroine on. We may not fully understand Matsuri's anti-Christmas sentiments, but that doesn't stop us from wanting her to succeed. They are interesting without ever lapsing into outrageousness or caricature. Their lives proceed unhurried, reassuring in their magical mundanity. In a triumph of magical realism, even the swarms of fantastic creatures that crowd the town's streets seem positively normal, making this volume even more relaxing than those that came before. Magic takes a back seat to just living life and the weirdness never enters head-scratching territory as it has in the past (remember Tyler Meowden and the bubblegum-squid Martian?); the final episodes seem content to simply chronicle their protagonists' (slightly unusual) lives. Heck, one entire episode is devoted entirely to Yurie lounging about under a kotatsu. What was the last show you ever saw that in?

Director Koji Masunari re-teams with many of the staff-members he used on R.O.D. the TV, so it's no surprise that Kamichu! achieves a similar level of quality. Scriptwriter Hideyuki Kurata abandons the narrative fireworks of the second half of R.O.D. in favor a more muted, subtle approach, coaxing emotions from the audience rather than wringing it from them. Character designer Taraku Uon moves further away from the slick sexuality of the Please! series, cleaving closer to reality for Kamichu!'s cast. Yurie is almost potato-faced, Mitsue is exactly the kind of girl that would usually be a background character, and Matsuri is believably pretty. Miko is adorable, as is Shokichi, but neither is blindingly so.

The entirely unnatural spirits that populate the town provide a cartoonish contrast to the more realistic humans. The town itself is marvelously detailed: full of crumbling steps, buildings just shabby enough to have character, cracked sidewalks, a suitably world-weary shrine, and lots of trees and sunshine; a veritable fount of small-town charm. As befits the show's more personal tone, the animation's greatest strengths (as strong as it is overall) are in its understanding of the physics of human movement (crawling, squirming, walking, biking, and running) and an eye for faces that emphasizes expressiveness over glass-doll good looks. Characters may not win any beauty pageants, but you will always know what they're feeling.

That said, if you know what you're getting into – and are a fan of bloody creature features like Hellsing or Berserk or the God of War games (which this particular adaptation seems to have borrowed a hell of a lot from!), there's plenty of fun to be had here and even some quality animation from time to time. While not billed as an anthology, the videogame's story has been handled by 6 different animation directors and 4 different animation studios, and the result – while wildly uneven at times – is really not half bad.

The whole gruesome mess starts out with what is, admittedly, the worst segment of the bunch. Film Roman, a C-list American animation studio that clearly farms out a lot of its work to some backwater Korean studio, handles the introduction and visually it's really clunky and amateurish. We're quickly introduced to the story's new plot, which involves the murder of Dante's wife, whose soul is quickly whisked away to the lower circles of Hell (always referred to as “Inferno” here, probably to further avoid any discomfort the obvious religious imagery and language might result in) by a smug Lucifer. Dante then meets Virgil, who offers to guide him through Hell. Then Dante kills a whole bunch of demons and even wrecks the boat that ferries lost souls across the river Styx (in fact, Dante spends a whole lot of time pretty much ruining Hell's infrastructure in this movie). As over-the-top as it all is, you're pretty much left waiting around for the animation studio to change because Film Roman's lazy, crappy animation is a pain to watch.

Thankfully, it's then that Dante enters Limbo, and we get the first studio transition, this time with Samurai Champloo artists Manglobe handling production, and the result is pretty brilliant, like you're suddenly watching a completely different and totally kick-ass anime version of Dante's Inferno. Film Roman should be kinda pissed off that their segment has to open for this one, because it's like putting a crayon drawing next to an oil painting. Manglobe's installment was directed by Shuko Murase, who is no stranger to gothic visuals thanks to his previous efforts like Ergo Proxy and Witch Hunter Robin, and you can definitely see his dark thumbprint here.

The animation is very fluid and the fresh character designs (which change depending on the animation studio producing the segment) are a joy to watch in motion. After a brief battle with the aforementioned demonic unbaptized babies who are stranded in limbo (although Cleopatra is nowhere to be seen), Dante confronts Minos, the corrupted king whose job it is to sort out the damned and place them in their particular circle of Hell. It's a fun battle, really well-animated and over way too fast; after a bit more Limbo, we're off to the second circle of Hell (and, unfortunately, a new animation studio that is not Manglobe).

The next four levels of the Inferno are handled by the same folks. Stepping up to the plate production-wise is Korean studio Dongwoo Animation, responsible for stuff like BASToF Syndrome, which could be a good thing if you're the one person who actually enjoyed BASToF Syndrome. It's not quite back to the poor quality of the Film Roman segment, but it even further highlights the level at which Manglobe was operating and really only makes you wish they'd have just produced the entire film. Still, it's not half bad – we get a pale, somewhat scrawny Dante and a Virgil who kinda looks like a Tolkien Elf by way of a Troll doll, and we're whisked through Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, and a whole bunch of Dante's tortured past animated with passable competency. Dante winds up fighting Cerberus (or at least what they call Cerberus in this thing; I was under the impression Cerberus was a three-headed dog who guarded the gates of hell, not this weird three-mouthed worm thing that eats the cursed bodies of fat people all day) and then, in the fourth circle, his own greedy father who Satan has bribed into trying to kill his own son.

The backstory they've added in here simply isn't all that interesting. It's obvious they're trying to bring some character into this story and make it more than just a travelogue of Hell, but it all feels a bit tacked on and certainly doesn't have any real dramatic weight to it. Dante's showdown with his big gross daddy is ultimately kinda silly (“Lucifer offered me a thousand years without torture and endless gold if I'd kill my own son!”) and at this point we're just waiting for the character designs to change again.

Starry Sky Episode Watch Download

Really, “silly” kinda sums up this entire enterprise; the story just can't be taken seriously because it's so over-the-top and feels exactly like what you'd expect from an “edgy” videogame adaptation of Dante's Inferno, but visually there's enough going on here to make it worth a watch if you can treat this like a talent showcase that focuses on infernal imagery rather than a serious stab at adapting classic literature. It is kind of fascinating to see how each artist will handle the characters and their fantastical environments, and those shifts alone make it worth at least a rental.

In those terms, this is more of a success than the thoroughly mediocre anthology film Batman: Gotham Knight (which had a few of the same folks working on it), if only because the artists had a lot more room to adapt. Frankly, the medieval idea of Hell is such a conceptually and aesthetically rich place for an artist to play around with that it's fun just to see where they go with the idea. So while Dante's Inferno: An Animated Epic is by no means “good” in the traditional sense and will absolutely offend those who are looking for something even remotely loyal to the source material, anyone with a taste for gruesome hellish fun who is willing to check their more sophisticated sensibilities at the door will probably have a good time with this.

While growing up, Kyon dreamed of having exciting experiences with an alien, time traveler, psychic, or other super-powered individual, but set those dreams aside in favor of maturity as he aged. When he enters high school, though, his world gets turned upside-down by the girl behind him in homeroom, who introduces herself as Haruhi Suzumiya and declares that she isn't interested in normal people, only “aliens, time travelers, espers, or sliders.” Despite her unsettling reputation, Kyon decides to strike up a conversation with Haruhi anyway (she is beautiful, after all), which results in him getting dragged into her effort to initiate a new school club, called the SOS Brigade, which will be dedicated to finding said aliens, time travelers, and psychics and hanging out with them.

Three other individuals – Yuki Nagato, the sole Literary Club member; Mikuru Asahira, a very moe upperclassman/mascot; and “mysterious transfer student” Itsuki Koizumi – also get dragged into Haruhi's weird and occasionally provocative schemes with varying degrees of willingness. What Haruhi doesn't know, but Kyon eventually finds out, is that she has unwittingly surrounded herself with precisely the kind of people she was looking for, and they are all there to watch her since she subconsciously has the power of a god. A melancholy day for Haruhi, it seems, could spell the literal end of reality as Kyon knows it.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Episode Watch English sub

MoHS is one of an increasing number of anime series based off of Japanese “lite novel” series rather than manga, and it adapts beautifully to animated form. Its scripting paces the first few episodes well, use of visual perspective and scene framing is consistently interesting, and the visuals bring out the full richness of its abnormalities while still retaining the context of an ordinary high school. That the visuals are also particularly eye-pleasing doesn't hurt. The distinctive, well-drawn, and clearly-defined character designs visually model the personality quirks of each character better than most series and provide just the right balance of cute and sexy for Haruhi and Mikuru, both of whom look especially good in the bunny costumes in Episodes 02 and (for Mikuru) 00. Quality scenery and background art contribute to a great overall look, while the animation is especially smooth and detailed for series anime; even the degree of background animation is unusually high. It shines brightest in the fully-animated dance number in the closer, which also has its characters lip-synching to the lyrics. Kyoto Animation proved on Full Metal Panic! Fumoffu? that it could produce high-quality work, and this is just another great example of that.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Episode Watch English sub

The English dub has been of particular interest to fans, so Bang Zoom! has assembled an all-star cast for the job. The efficacy of the performances varies. Crispin Freeman has proven in the past that he can do the sardonic, put-upon male lead well (think Shannon in Scrapped Princess), so he is an ideal fit as Kyon, and Stephanie “Eureka/Orihime” Sheh so closely mimics the unique original vocal style for Mikuru that at times it can be hard to tell that it's a different actor doing the English role. Johnny Bosch works reasonably well as Itsuki, as do the performances in most supporting roles, but Michelle Ruff struggles to find the proper style for Yuki, with the monotone she has settled on sounding duller than it should. The key performance, of course, is Wendee Lee's rendition of Haruhi, which certainly has the tone, enthusiasm, and delivery style right but differs enough in inflection and vocal quality that it will take some getting used to for fans who have heard the original Japanese performance first.

The English script sticks close to the original, with only minor adjustments evident, but the English subtitles have made some odd choices in their translation. “Future man,” while it may be more literally accurate, does not sound as good as the “time traveler” used in the dub, nor does the truncation of the Data Integration Thought Entity referred to in episodes 02 and 03 to just “thought entity” despite being recited completely in the dub. The font used for the subtitles is a little larger than normal, which makes one wonder if screen space may have been an issue shaping these choices. Watching the series at least once dubbed-only is also advisable because the subtitles sometimes cover up meaningful on-screen text. Unfortunately releasing the episodes in chronological order has forced the replacement of the original catchy Next Episode spots, but that is a carry-over from the Japanese DVD release (which was also in chronological order).

Bandai Entertainment has not had a good track record of late for putting Extras on their releases, but the first volume of MoHS comes well-stocked. The DVD itself is marked with the SOS Brigade emblem, and includes Extras such as the clean opener and closer for Episode 00, live-action Japanese TV spots featuring Haruhi's seiyuu, “Making of” clips that are actually about the live-action spots, and the original Next Episode previews from the TV broadcasts. Most notable is the inclusion of Parts 00, 01, and 02 of “The Adventures of the ASOS Brigade,” the video clips featuring Patricia Lee (of Power Rangers notoriety) and two of the original seiyuu that were used on the quirky ASOS Brigade website (www.asosbrigade.com) to help promote and make announcements about the series' American release. Watching these will allow newcomers to appreciate how truly oddball the series' promotion has been so far. The Limited Edition version also comes with a custom art box, a CD soundtrack, a double-sided pencil board, an iron-on patch, and a hair ribbon.

The first hint that something is interesting in dullsville is the episode's post-credits coda, where a glimpse of an actual sense of humor can be caught. The show goes on to distinguish itself in a lot of dumb, little, yet strangely important ways. Noboru, it turns out, isn't really the main character. At least, not alone. He shares the throne with Ku and, most importantly, Toru. Noboru doesn't live alone, as countless romantic heroes do, but with his amusingly even-keeled dad. Ku's avowed asexuality turns out to be quite real. While for the purposes of clarity she's been assigned the female pronoun, Ku is equally comfortable in male or female guise, and equally comfortable seducing policemen or flocks of teen girls. The focus on eleven-year-old Toru, the presence of a chaperone, and Ku's absolute disinterest in matters of the heart effectively banish romance from Fox Deity's bag o' ambitions. The only romance going on in Fox Deity is inside the too-active imagination of Noboru's wannabe girlfriend Misaki, who incidentally is the closest thing Noboru has to a real romantic interest.

The series' poor initial impression comes mostly from its first episode. There's little hint within its introductory confines that Fox Deity will be anything but pseudo-romantic supernatural twaddle. It does all the usual drudge work: introduce the über-nice hero; explain his connection to the curvaceous magical heroine; throw in another female stereotype—Ko, the blunt inexpressive girl—just for fun. An undistinguished magical battle follows and the episode ends with the guy and the two girls heading back to the city to live under the same roof. The urge to watch the next episode is not acute. About the only thing the series can claim in the way of promise at this point is an unusual level of attention to the details of traditional Japanese magic and Ku's domineering personality (and avowed asexuality).

It may seem a small thing to remove the romance from a cohabiting-with-hot-girls premise, but in addition to simply being a refreshing change of pace, the series' disinterest in romantic bonds also frees it up to focus on infinitely more interesting family bonds. The trust and respect Noboru, Toru and their father have for each other infuses the episodic tales of attacking yokai. Ku's fierce protectiveness of the brothers grows until it is almost frightening, reaching perhaps its peak when she torches a local god rather than allow Toru to come to harm. In the meantime Noboru works to acclimate Ko to the informal ease of the Takagami house while Toru takes to Ku like a motherless child to a potential surrogate.

The fruits of those bonds can be very sweet, as when a Noboru-influenced Ko begins an adorably halting friendship with Misaki, and the light they throw on Ku's character even recasts some of the first episode's events in a more interesting light. Their real achievement, however, is the warm and often amusing dynamic of the Takagami household. Ko's appealing awkwardness, Ku's capriciousness, Noboru's well-meaning worries, Toru's unprejudiced acceptance, their father's smiling sangfroid, the regard they all have for each other—it all makes for a highly appealing home, a place that, if you can't live in, you can at least enjoy visiting. The series is smart enough to recognize that, and treats its potentially bombastic magical-action plots with a calmness that befits the easygoing nature of the Takagamis and leaves plenty of time to spend in their company.

Now, no one will ever mistake Fox Deity for great anime. The characters are simple, and too often defined by their central quirks. Toru's much-remarked intelligence lapses conveniently whenever an excuse is needed to get him in supernatural trouble. Ku's personality can get abrasive, particularly when she starts throwing "I want ice cream! Now!" tantrums. The action sequences are frequent, but feel obligatory. They're generally pretty cheap, with shortcuts aplenty and little attention paid to impact, excitement, or the all-important coolness factor. Often they're exceedingly silly (magical Whack-a-Mole anyone?) and are even more frequently peripheral to the plot (which usually revolves around something like getting a part-time job or harassing Noboru at school).

But even if it isn't great, it is enjoyable. The fights usually have interesting strategic turns and occasionally allow Ku's beastly nature to burst from beneath her bishojo looks. Light-comedy veteran Yoshiaki Iwasaki rarely overplays the characters' quirks, letting them surface unexpectedly for knowing chuckles. He knows exactly how to animate Ko's impossibly cute habit of using hand signals and sound effects when her vocabulary fails her, and how to wring more laughs out of Misaki's internal tsukkomi/boke routine than should really be possible. He makes good comedic, and occasionally empathetic, use of both the charmingly light score and the equally charming character designs. Fox Deity may be little more than a diversion—Iwasaki directs little else—but it's a well-made diversion.

One month after the peak of the hanami season in central and southern Japan, the cherry blossom front has reached the northern tip of Honshu. On a 2-day trip to the northern Tohoku Region I will be reporting from the region's two most celebrated cherry blossom spots, Hirosaki Castle today and Kakunodate tomorrow.

Hirosaki Castle

Of all the cherry blossom spots I have visited so far, Hirosaki Castle in Aomori Prefecture is probably the best. With its abundance of over 2500 trees, cherry blossom tunnels, petal filled moats, numerous pleasant picnic areas, rental rowing boats, many varieties of cherry trees and illuminations in the evenings (ended yesterday), it feels like multiple great cherry blossom spots combined into a single one.

Hirosaki Castle is one of Japan's twelve castles, whose keeps survived the post-feudal age intact. While the castle keep is rather small (due to its size and position in the corner of the main citadel, I mistook it for a turret on my first visit), the grounds around it have been turned into a spacious public park that can absorb the large crowds visiting each year relatively comfortably.

Despite the large numbers of visitors it does not feel overly crowded

Because March and April 2010 were colder than usual in northern Japan, the cherry blossom season is taking place several days later this year than in the average year. The blossoms around Hirosaki Castle opened on April 27, three days later than average, and reached full bloom around May 2 just in time for the Golden Week holiday season.

Due to the blossoms' delay and in order to avoid the peak of the Golden Week, I kept on postponing this report trip multiple times and was on the verge of canceling it, when the state of the cherry blossoms, the weather forecast and the availability of hotel rooms, rental cars and train seats all turned out favorably for today, after all.

I am glad that I did not cancel the trip, as the cherry blossoms were spectacular today. Despite reaching full bloom only three ago, many trees around the park have already started to lose petals in considerable numbers. While the trees still looked very beautiful, the falling petals created attractive flower blizzards (hanafubuki) and floated in the millions on the park's ponds and moats.

The continued loss of petals is expected to be quite rapid, so that many trees will probably be beyond their peak by the weekend. There are, however, a few tree varieties that are in bloom a few days later than the dominating somei yoshino, especially the many pink weeping cherry trees in the main citadel (honmaru) of the castle that should remain in full bloom for a few more days.

Step One:

And for the first time in the lives of many the notion of men and women sharing society as friends in fidelity is not only a possible option, but welcomed in the season it happens.

There have been mockers and scoffers of moral purity in every age, era and generation: ours is no different; they too live among us and they know who they are. Women are of the greater sexual nature and men are to desire them sexually. It is so sad that we can find this online websites that are for relationships and dating. It is most unfortunate that this social element has achieved high levels of exposure and influence from which to foist their corrupted perceptions of human interaction between sexes upon impressionable minds; many of whom have made the senseless, disastrous mistake of turning their mind and heart toward dating for a more physical relationship than a relationship that comes from the heart.

By the lights of this element men and women exist for the exclusive purpose of erotic abandon and every conceivable form of sexual degradation as even apparent with some dating sites online. Somewhere between total decadence and moral impeccability, vast multitudes are finding it necessary to discover and decide if men and women can and do coexist as casual acquaintances and mutual friends in a relationship. But its not so much a matter of can we be just friends, its a matter of deliberate choice on the basis of established moral boundaries regardless of the social media and dating websites as well as the image women have today even through online media.

Obviously, and in conclusion the ultimate answer to this question rests with the individual. As individuals, however, we must bear in mind that we increasingly live in a globalized society thanks to the internet and online dating and relationships websites so now our actions have a far reaching impact on society beyond the scope of our personal island paradise. When one voice, one attitude and one code of moral behavior are multiplied 200 million times, we hold within our collective grasp the destiny of a nation and the world. When I was studying in college in the United States I noticed that besides the language, American students differed from Russian in one thing: they didn't let each other copy papers and they didn't do each other's assignments. My Russian mentality couldn't grasp why.

When I was at school in Russia it was "natural" for students to whisper test answers to each other and pass the cheat sheets along. I could not imagine my friend not helping me with my physics tests. He was good at it, I was terrible and since we were friends it was not even discussed that he should help me. I, on the other hand, was better in languages, so I wrote a number of compositions and checked quite a few papers for him.

I didn't even think it was dishonest and I didn't feel bad doing what we did. I knew that if after graduation he would need to write a cover letter or even a love letter to his girlfriend, I will be always there to help him. The same way I knew he would help me with math or physics.

I didn't have any friends (the way I define friend) at the U.S. school, but I noticed that people who claimed to be the best buddies didn't copy each others papers and didn't do each other's homework.

Back then I didn't really know American culture well, so I couldn't understand why friends don't help friends. Now that I understand more (or at least I like to think so), it makes sense to me. In American culture you have to rely on your own abilities and strength, so if you don't learn how to write a paper properly, your classmate friends are not going to do it for you later in life. They may for money or for some exchanged favor, but they are not going to do your work for you just because you are their friend. Even if they are really good at what needs to be done.

Russian friendships are intense. It takes months or even years for Russians to become friends, but when they do, they become like a family. A friend is not the same as a drinking or a dinner buddy you meet once a month and discuss a new brand of chips with. A friend is someone who will lend you money when you need it; listen to your problems and let you pour out your soul. A friend is someone who will do anything for you, but who also expects you to be there for them no matter what.

Russians rarely go to psychologists or psychiatrists, because they have friends to talk to and to help them solve their problems.

If you are stuck at the airport or need a ride, and your friend has a car, he or she will be happy to help you out and I really mean "happy" when I say it. When we went to Russia for the first time, we needed a ride from the airport to the city where I used to live. I didn't want to bother anyone and I got Americanized a bit, so we just hired someone to take us home. When my Russian friends, a married couple whom I haven't seen in person for more than 2 years, found out about it, they got really offended. "Why didn't you call us?" the guy said. "You don't trust us or something?" No, they wouldn't have accepted any money and I doubt they would even let us pay for gas. They were (and are) just true friends.

In comparison, once my husband was away for a business trip and I needed some help with my parking light (I wrecked it by accident in our backyard). I called him; he called his friend of 10 years (his best friend by the way) and asked him to come over and take a look. The friend (who was 5 minutes away) came with some red tape and put it on my light bulb (which was not damaged by the way). It took him less than 3 minutes. I ("jokingly") told him that I don't have any cash, so I can't pay him right away. He said: "No worries, when your hubby gets home he can pay me back by taking me out for dinner". And to my surprise, that's what happened, so the 20 cents which probably was the cost of the piece of tape and 3 minutes of time cost us 20 bucks.

Again, I am not saying the Russian way is better than the American or vice versa, but things are certainly different and it may be difficult for people from both cultures to make friends and maintain friendships. Finding a balance takes time and effort, but I believe that it is possible. Don't push your Russian wife to make friends, because it is not as easy for her as it may seem and don't be jealous or suspicious if she calls her friends often and tells you how much she misses them. Time will help her with both.

Kusatsu has the largest natural flow of hot spring water in all of Japan, much of which surfaces at the yubatake in the town center. The sulfurous, highly acidic water has been considered among Japan's best for centuries, and has been lauded as a treatment for ailments that include arthritis, fatigue and skin disease among others.

Other bath related attractions in Kusatsu are the Onsen Museum on the third floor of the bus terminal, displaying the history of onsen and Kusatsu town, and the Yumomi, a traditional method of cooling down the hot spring water to bathing temperature that includes dancing and singing. Admission: 800 yen
This public bath house offers a variety of indoor and outdoor baths. The main attraction is Awaseyu, a traditional wooden indoor bath house with seven tubs with water differing in acidity level and temperature (from 38 to 46 degrees). Awaseyu is gender mixed except during designated women-only time slots.

Shirohatanoyu
Next to the Yubatake
Hours: daily 5:00-23:00 (closed at 8:00 for cleaning)

One of eighteen local communal baths, Shirohatanoyu is the closest to the Yubatake, just a few steps from the hot spring source. It has two baths that fit 2-4 people each. The water is extremely hot as it comes directly from the spring.

Admission: 900 yen
This health center is named for Dr. Erwin Von Baelz, the Imperial Family doctor during the Meiji period, who promoted Kusatsu as a health resort. The center's observatory baths offer views of the surrounding mountains.

A very popular food eaten during Hanami is called Dango. It's a chewy snack made of rice flour.

In Tokyo, the Sakura season typically takes place around the end of March and beginning of April. On Japan's southern island Okinawa, it starts around January, while on the northern island - Hokkaido, as late as May.

To complicate it -the blooming time differs from year to year depending on the weather. If the weather during the months before the season is relatively mild, blossoms will open early. If it was cold, blossoms will open later.

The start of the Sakura blooming season can vary From year to year by as much as two weeks.

Every year, around this time, the weather forecasts include reports on the advance of the Sakura zensen (sakura front). The Meteorological Agency and the media follow the so called "blossom front" as it slowly proceeds.

The cherry Bloom Is Short.

Full bloom is usually reached within one week after the opening of the first blossoms.

A week later, the blooming peak is over and the blossoms are falling from the trees. Flowers are so fragile that a warm spring rain can easily cause the petals to fall.

This delicate beauty symbolizes purity and melancholy. Japanese poetry and literature are full of analogies to it.

There are many different varieties of Japanese cherry trees and this article will list some of the most common to the area. There are at least 12 different varieties of cherry that will be listed starting with the Somei Yoshino.

This is the most numerous of cherry trees in Japan, and comes with slightly pink or almost white 5 petal flowers. The Yamazuka is a wild, native cherry that grows in mountainous areas with slightly pink 5 petal flowers. The Ukon has 10-20 petals per blossom and these are yellow in color. Kanzan blossoms hold as many as 30 pink petals.

The Fugenzo has about 30 petals per blossom and start out as a white to slight pink that turns into a darker pink. The Shogetsu has white blossoms of 20 petals. And the Kikuzakura has 100 petals per blossom. This is one of the late bloomers as far as cherry blossoms go. Now the times of the year to see these in Japan are as follows: Yoshino - Late March early April. Yamazakura is late March and early April as well. Skidarezakura - Late March - early April. Ichiyo - Mid April, Ukon - mid April. Kanzan blooms from mid to late April. Fugenzo also blooms from mid to late April. Shogetsu blooms from mid to late April and Kikuzakura blooms from late April to early May.

There are also other varieties of cherry blossom trees in Japan. These include Yaezakura, Shidarezakura and Yamazakura. The Yaezakura have large flowers with pink petals, The Shidarezakura has pink flowers. There are also fall varieties such as Autumnalis, which is considered to be a cross between Higan and Mamezakura. Here are some prime places in Japan for viewing the Sakura. In Tokyo, Odawara Castle, Omiya Koen Park, Mobara Koen Park, Kamine Koen Park and Takasaki Kannon-yama Koen are the places to be. In Kyoto, the best places to visit are Nara Park, Hikone-jo Castle, Himejijo Castle, and Akashi Koen.

In Osaka, The Japan Mint Osaka Head Office, Osako Nishinomaru Garden, Banpaku Koen, Kema Sakuanomiya Park and Kishiwada-jo Castle are your best options. The Tale of Genji: The world's first novel

Written by the Japanese noblewoman Murasaki Shikibu in the early eleventh century, *The Tale of Genji* is a classic work of Japanese literature concerning the son of a Japanese emperor, his romantic life and the customs of aristocratic society at the time. Called alternatively the world's first novel, the first modern novel or the first novel to be considered a classic; precisely which is a matter of debate by those who make a living debating such things. Nobel Prize winning novelist Yasunari Kawabata named *The Tale of Genji* "the highest pinnacle of Japanese literature. Even down to our day there has not been a piece of fiction to compare with it."

*The Tale of Genji* was written for Japanese women of the yokibito, or aristocracy, and possesses many of the elements found in novels today: a central character, major and minor characters, well-developed characterisation, psychological insight, complexity, sequential events taking place upon a timeline based upon the central character's lifetime. Rather than using a plot, events just happen and characters evolve simply by growing older, much as in real life. The internal consistency of *Genji* is a notable feature, and evidence of Murasaki's skill; all characters age in relation to each other, and relationships between them remain consistent throughout chapters.

Unusually, none of the characters are referred by name in the novel, a complicating factor for modern readers and translators alike; they are referred to instead by their function, role, honorific or relation to other characters; for example 'Minister of the Right,' 'His Excellency' or 'Heir Apparent.' Lack of names was a feature of Heian era court protocol, which decreed their use in a public forum as unacceptably familiar.

There is debate over how much of the Genji was actually written by Murasaki Shikibu herself, with some of the novel's later chapters containing discrepancies in style and rare continuity errors, with scholars suggesting that Shikbu's daughter Daini no Sanmi may have completed the novel. A further complication is the fact that the tale ends abruptly, in mid-sentence, probably not as intended by the author herself.

Written to entertain women of the aristocracy in eleventh century Japan, the novel employs Heian period court Japanese: highly inflected language with extremely complex grammar. Poetry is often used in conversation, as was the custom in court life, with classic poems modified or rephrased according to the situation at hand. Of the classic Japanese tanka form, the poems would have been well known to the intended audience, and are often left unfinished as if thoughts unsaid, the reader expected to complete a word or sentence-- a complicating factor for a modern readership unversed in Heian era poetry.

Intended for a female audience and by a female author, the novel was written entirely in Hiragana script, so-called a "women's hand" at the time. All official documents, essays and works of history were written in Chinese characters and only by men, producing the paradoxical situation where men wrote mostly in bad Chinese while their spouses produced excellent works in native Japanese. Women's prose and poetry from this period, of which The Tale of Genji is pre-eminent in same manner as Shakespeare in English, form the basis of what in time became a truly national literature, as poets switched from Chinese to the new Japanese scripts for their elegant simplicity and flexibility.

Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: Retail clothing chain Hot Topic has added merchandise from Yana Toboso's manga Black Butler to its lineup. The merchandise currently consists of a t-shirt featuring the series' titular butler, Sebastien Michaelis, in red on a black background. The shirts are available in sizes ranging from extra-small to 3XL.

The Black Butler manga launched in Japan in September 2006 in Square Enix's Monthly GFantasy shōnen manga anthology. Yen Press licensed the manga for North American release and began serializing it in its Yen Plus anthology in July of 2009. In October 2008 a TV anime was produced based on the manga, and Funimation licensed it for North America. A follow-up anime series will air in Japan starting this July. The anime inspired a fashion show in Tokyo in 2008.

We know Japan as a country of a rising sun, as a land where people live in picturesque landscapes in a fairy tale environments. Both high technology and legends are tightly associated with this eastern island-based territory. To add some flavor to definition of this faraway nation, let us quote Roland Barthes who called it the Empire of Signs.

Thus everything has its meaning in Japan, from gestures to written hieroglyphs which are plenty in number and form unpredictable meanings based on a combination of simple signs.

Even bodies and clothes signify so many concepts and sociological positions that you as a foreigner can get easily lost. Barthes mentioned that bodies in Japan act and exist according to a pure erotic project.

Consequentially it is no wonder that anime and manga comics originated in Japan and gained incredible popularity. There is no great subtlety and art in these animations and drawings that look like an entertainment for kids. Nevertheless there is a whole bunch of admirers, millions of them to say the least, throughout the world, who identify themselves with their favorite Naruto or Sailor Moon, and pay whatever it costs to get the latest manga, or to go to the largest comic market in Tokyo twice a year.

If we get back to Barnes, we see that erotic connotations in manga are overwhelming. Thus main divisions of manga are strongly associated with specific type of male or female audiences according to their sexual preferences. Let us have a glimpse of what forms of manga are published in Japan: Shojo manga are comics for teenage girls, shojo-ai are romantic comics for teenage girls, shonen are comics for teenage boys, shonen-ai are romantic comics for men, redisu are comics for young adult females, seijin manga are comics for adult males, shojo-ai yuri manga are romantic comics for lesbians, redikomi manga are comics written by women for teen and adult women telling about more realistic, everyday happenings, doujinshi manga are comics written and illustrated by amateurs, etc. There are literally hundreds of varieties of manga, and each one is usually limited by genger and sexual inclinations of readers.

This testifies to incredible and diverse popularity, preferences, interests, and tastes of Japanese comics readers. As time goes by, there is no doubt the genre will shift to include a lot more topics.
Thus manga comics are yet another proof of Japan as the empire of signs.

Review: Seitokai no Ichizon done right: No otaku in-jokes, no shoddy romantic overtones, and plenty of real live humor. Same basic setup though. Takatoshi Tsuda has just begun high-school at a recently integrated girl's school. First day in he is accosted by the student council president, who takes a shine to him and summarily inducts him into the council as vice-president. Given that President Shino Amakusa is freak of nature with wild misconceptions about the male gender (and an oddly academic interest to match), and the other two members—both female—are reasonably determined to have fun at his expense, the position isn't exactly ideal, but Tsuda has the self-possession to swing it. Though he's more of a straight man than a functioning administrator.

Seitokai Yakuindomo removes the adolescent wish-fulfillment from its romantic-comedy premise by chopping the romantic part clean off. For all of Shino's gutter-minded interest in the opposite sex, there is zero romantic tension between her and Tsuda, and even less between Tsuda and the rest of the council. Yakuindomo is only interested in your funny bone, not your heart or your libido. And its knowledge of anatomy is good enough that its intended target ends up under fairly constant assault. Shino's assumptions about men are a kick (apparently real men carry condoms), and her two council-mates toe the line between amusingly odd and irritatingly antic more often than they cross it. Tsuda doesn't supply much humor on his own, but he plays comic foil to the other three with a wry sangfroid that is both funny and endearing. Director Hiromitsu Kanazawa also mixes things up with the occasional pure sight gag and comic stylistic flourish, all while parlaying the four-panel gag-manga pacing into a staccato comic attack.

Review:

Working on an anime inspired by master storytellers like Osamu Tezuka, Rumiko Takahashi and Hayao Miyazaki must be every animator's dream. Instead of being stuck on a get-rich-quick, sell-more-merchandise project, they get to make real art because the source material is already brilliant. Such is the case with the final episode of the Black Jack OAV, where one of Tezuka's most moving tales goes even beyond the original with its multi-layered drama. Some may accuse the animation staff of being too ambitious with embellishments, but no one will disagree that this is storytelling at its best.

Adapting the work of a manga legend might also be an animator's nightmare, though, as messing with Tezuka's stories, is, basically messing with God. This episode takes several liberties from the original, making it more of a personal story than a parable, and weaves in Tsukiko's fate with a folk legend made up by the director. Even without the mythical element, the setting and approach of this story is unique; a hopelessly polluted city in most other anime means that someone's going to come tromping along in a mecha suit. Despite such originality, however, the story falters in its execution: right after Black Jack's climactic surgery on Tsukiko, it would be natural to expect that things will wrap up in several minutes, but instead it goes through multiple-endings syndrome. Perhaps the animators stretched themselves too far in creating new story threads; were it not for the folk tale and investigating Tsukiko's history and tying up all the loose ends, the pacing would be more streamlined.

Besides the unwieldy ending, Black Jack purists might also frown on the protagonist's occasional out-of-character behavior. The most glaring incident is when he blackmails the corporation to help pay for Tsukiko's care (this just happens to be one of those non-ending endings that could have been cut out, too). And even if he is a renegade doctor with a compassionate side, his kind demeanor doesn't really explain why Tsukiko falls in love with him instantly. Despite such lapses, their development throughout the episode is still a marvel of well-planned storytelling. As Black Jack's character and Tsukiko's past are slowly revealed, we find ourselves becoming more and more sympathetic towards them, until the inevitable ending breaks everyone's heart.

Director Osamu Dezaki (not to be confused) goes all out with his animation skills, overcoming the hindrances of the mid-90's with sheer ingenuity. The fact that an anime from back then can look so polished is remarkable in itself, with sharpness and color to match any of today's titles. This episode's visual strengths come not from a super-smooth frame rate or flashy tricks, but from a veteran's knowledge of just when and where to use the right images. Dezaki wields a full of arsenal of techniques: traditional art for the folk tale scenes, special effects based on medical gadgetry, rapid close-ups, and his favorite, the split-screen. Even something as simple as a strong camera angle can turn a scene from generic to dramatic. Meanwhile, the character designs have been heavily updated from Tezuka's originals, with added detail and sharper lines that will make them more accessible to modern viewers.

The understated music score is perfectly suited to conveying mystery and drama, even though some of it sounds like it came right out of American prime time TV. Fans of CSI or ER can attest to that musical style—only a few instruments at any one time, open-ended melodies, and a melancholy mood. With its light-handed approach, the soundtrack is a fitting accompaniment to the gentle story, and treats the ears much better than the generic theme songs that should stay right in the 90's where they belong.

Playing an iconic character like Black Jack might be intimidating for a voice actor, but Kirk Thornton meets the challenge on the English dub. His calm voice brings out the essence of Black Jack's personality: subdued confidence and a kind heart beneath a mysterious appearance. The side characters aren't quite as consistent; Black Jack's young charge Pinoko and the innkeeper definitely suit their roles, but Tsukiko pushes it too far with the young cheerful girl voice, and the cab driver lays on too much of a stereotypical accent. The translation strays from the original phrasing several times, but never changes the meaning.

Most anime DVDs would qualify as complete with an art gallery, some previews, and a textless opening and closing, but this disc goes the extra mile with a director's commentary from Osamu Dezaki. Unlike most commentaries, this one is so enlightening that it ought to be required viewing. Think of it as getting 100 minutes of running time even though the case only says 50 minutes. Dezaki goes into detail about his animation style, the ideas he wanted to bring in, and how he adapted the story to fit his vision. Often he refers to this single episode as a "film," which just goes to show how much dedication went into the Black Jack series.

Many anime titles claim to be dramatic, many claim to be mysterious, but few do it as well as Black Jack, thanks to having the greatest manga storyteller of all time behind it. Although it was produced after Osamu Tezuka's death, the series certainly bears his trademarks: unforgettable characters and meaningful narrative that touches the heart. Maybe there's a bit too much narrative at the end, due to a particularly ambitious animation staff, but it's still an emotional trip, weaving ancient folk tales, the latest medical technology, and everything in between to tell a remarkable story.
